NUS Museum and All Things Bukit Brown presents "Moving House" - a screening, two presentations and a Q&A session to mark the next significant development for the planned eight-lane highway that will cut through the cemetery.

Earlier this month, two significant rituals took place - a private exhumation of a staked tomb at Bukit Brown, and at Kopi Sua Cemetery (located in the greater Bukit Brown area), a pre-exhumation ritual. Both were observed and documented. It is timely to resurrect an award winning documentary by filmmaker, Tan Pin Pin. "Moving House" looked at how exhumation affected one family out of the 55,000 forced to relocate the remains of their relatives to a columbarium as gravesites made way for urban redevelopment. The picnic mood of the Chew family outing to move the remains belies the sadness and confusion everyone feels. It was screened in December 2001. 11 years on, what can be expected and what will be the impact of a fresh round of exhumation anticipated for some 3,700 tombs to come as Bukit Brown makes way for a highway?

Dr Hui Yew Foong, tasked with documenting affected graves will share some of his insights on the first exhumation of the a tomb Bukit Brown as documented by his team. Claire Leow, a volunteer guide at Buki Brown and co-editor of bukitbrown.com follows with a presentation and video clip of a pre-exhumation ritual with family members of a tomb to be exhumed at Kopi Sua. A Q&A session with Pin Pin and Dr Hui will follow.
